About

As the largest division across our partnership sites, the abdominal imaging division covers on-site services in all hospitals, including Sinai Health, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Rehab, and Women’s College Hospital.

Our division boasts strong multidisciplinary relationships with allied abdominal and related medical and surgical programs across all sites for patient care as well as for research.

Our mandate spans exceptional, subspecialist clinical care as well as research in multiple abdominal imaging related areas as well as teaching. We cover multiple areas of subspecialist abdominal imaging research, ranging from hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB, or liver, pancreas, and gallbladder) research, specific liver-and pancreas-only projects through cooperative GI as well as GU research.

Imaging Modalities and Facilities

JDMI hosts an extensive fleet of imaging infrastructure/equipment across our 3 organizations. The department strives to employ the use of new and cutting-edge imaging technology to offer state-of-the-art quality care to our patients and to drive innovative research in the field of medical imaging.

AI

We are the first and so far, the only imaging department in Canada which was able to initiate an AI-research chair which is being held by one of the abdominal imaging radiologists. JDMI in addition has created a center for AI research support with an additional research chair.

Education and Fellowships

Continuous educational efforts for our residents and fellows include participation in more than 20 multidisciplinary rounds per week.  Fellows are also encouraged to present the clinical cases at selected rounds.

Furthermore, we have weekly case conferences, regular city-wide rounds together with the other teaching hospitals in the city, PRV’s rounds, journal club as well as dedicated fellow and resident  rounds several times per week.

Abdominal imaging fellows also have to participate in a research project or a quality improvement initiative alongside with the staff and present the results/publication at the end of their term.

Each year, we teach and work alongside 10 international fellows who typically spend one to two years with us for further abdominal imaging subspecialization.
